Joey & Mary’s Rainy Cherry Blossom Engagement Session | Washington, D.C. Wedding Photographer

Nothing screams spring quite like the D.C. cherry blossom season. This finicky tree sure does attract a hullabaloo on the National Mall each year. It can be super tricky to catch peak bloom as a wedding photographer, but the hard work is worth it. Even during their rainy cherry blossom engagement session, Joey and Mary made the best of peak bloom this past weekend!

We learned a lot from this cherry blossom engagement session: How to secure NPS permits, how to dance around tourists and events, and where to find blossoms where there would be less people. But we weren’t quite prepared for the down pour of rain that cut our session short! We got SOAKED. But because of their trust in me, we accomplished so much variety in their portraits before the rain hit that the Tidal Basin photos were just a bonus, despite the turn in the weather.

Prepping for Their Session

This was my first cherry blossom engagement session in Washington, D.C. Somehow I was able to dodge it the last few years, but Joey and Mary wore me down pretty easily when they said they wanted to go for it 😉 After being a D.C. wedding photographer for almost five years, the cherry blossom season became more headache than blessing.

First off, it draws unbearable crowds of tourists! People come from all over the world to see our famous blossoms. And the trees only remain in peak bloom for about a week, so the concentration of tourists is immense in a short amount of time.

Secondly, the blossoms are best seen on the National Mall – which requires pricey permitting from the National Park Service. It can cost around $150 per session in permits. For some couples, it’s worth it.

Additionally, because the blossoms come on their own terms and die off as quickly as they bloomed, it can be really difficult to time a session around peak bloom. Joey and Mary exercised so much flexibility and patience with a couple reschedules as I watched the bloom predictions move dates.

Lastly, with blossoms come spring events in D.C. The morning of their original session date, there was a half marathon. Roads were closed around the National Mall and Tidal Basin areas. Good thing we caught it and were able to push another week. But this meant the session would occur on peak weekend, during the D.C. cherry blossom festival. Parking was nonexistent. My patient husband dropped me off and parked a mile and a half away from our session spot.

What I Learned for the Next D.C. Cherry Blossom Engagement Session

Out of all the challenges came lots of good lessons. Here are some tips I would share with any couple considering a D.C. cherry blossom engagement session in the future.

  1. Get a permit as early as possible! We secured ours back in late January-early February. A lot of the process happens over mail-in forms so leave plenty of time for mailing and processing.
  2. Don’t be surprised by the cost. Factor in about $90-150 into the cost dependent on location for permits. Additionally, some photographers may charge higher rates for cherry blossom sessions because of the hassle and flexibility needed in their schedule to make it happen. Determine if it’s worth it to you or if you’d rather a different time/location to cut costs.
  3. Be flexible! Peak bloom can shift even after predictions are made. Make sure to clear your calendar for the weeks surrounding bloom season.
  4. Uber or have a friend/family member drive you to and from the session. Parking always sucks on the Mall, but it’s even worse during cherry blossom season. Try to find a way to get dropped off so you don’t run late finding parking!
  5. It WILL be a sunrise session. Non-negotiable. If the crowds were that large for Joey and Mary’s session, despite being a sunrise session AND crummy weather, I won’t dare try a sunset session. No way.
  6. It SHOULD be a week day session. Joey and Mary had a Saturday session, and even in the rain tourists were everywhere. I know that’s tough on couples who work traditional 9-5’s, but a week day sunrise session could be the answer. It’s worth burning an hour or two of PTO to have less people around.

Joey & Mary’s Rainy Cherry Blossom Engagement Session

Despite all the challenges and learning moments, Joey and Mary outshone it all during their rainy cherry blossom engagement session. We started the morning with just a humid, cold fog. They were ready to rock from the moment we arrived!

Joey and Mary were so sweet together. I couldn’t get over how lovingly Joey held his bride in many of the poses. And after each pose, he would celebrate a job well done by smooching her right on the cheek bone. It was precious watching them interact!

Engagement Ring with Legacy

Their blue and teal outfits popped against the fluffy pink blooms. And along the river, we had plenty of time with heavily flowered trees without having to share too much with other tourists. Eventually we went into an outfit change and I photographed Mary’s engagement ring.

The solitaire, square diamond sat in a band with smaller diamonds on either side. This ring was special. It belonged to Joey’s great-grandmother. Read that again… his GREAT-grandmother!! He joked that it was a cost-effective way to propose, but I melted knowing this family heirloom was passed down that many generations. When I tell you my hands shook a little extra while styling and photographing it… I’m not lying. In my head I kept saying, “Don’t drop it. Don’t lose it….” over and over.

When It Rains, It Pours!

When they showed up in their casual outfits, the fog turned into a misty drizzle. We pulled out the clear umbrellas. Joey and Mary were down to continue, hopeful the rain might scare away the tourists from the Tidal Basin. We trekked across the street to check it out.

There were definitely tourists still, but it was a more workable sized crowd. We took our chances and began shooting along the Tidal Basin. But that’s when the rain REALLY picked up. My camera worked HARD, and I often had to wipe water from the glass to try to focus. The rain turned to heavy, dense droplets and we knew we were being cut short. But Mary and Joey were such good sports. I assured them we still got a ton of variety even though it was a shorter session.

On the way back to the car, we met up with Mary’s sister who dropped them off initially to find parking. Her sister handed me a bag of homemade chocolate pretzels! How did she know I am a glutton when it comes to salty chocolate snacks? We said our goodbyes and I quickly began counting down the days until their wedding. They’ll be getting married the day before Kevin and my first wedding anniversary. I can’t think of a sweeter couple to share an anniversary weekend with.

Every couple has a unique story, and the best engagement photo ideas go far beyond posed smiles. Recently, I photographed “A” & “L’s” engagement session—an ENP couple who requested that I protect their privacy and not share identifiable images online. Their request wasn’t just respected; it opened the door for a deeply intentional session filled with quiet, meaningful moments that beautifully reflected their relationship.

As a photographer specializing in storytelling and editorial imagery, I want couples to know that your engagement session can and should feel personal. You don’t need to perform for the camera—you just need a photographer who knows how to turn your real-life love into visual poetry.

Why Engagement Photo Ideas Should Be Personal

Many couples think engagement photos are just about dressing up and smiling at the camera. While I definitely capture classic portraits, that’s only a fraction of the full story. The best engagement photo ideas come from understanding who you are as a couple—your rituals, your connection, your humor, and your journey.

For “A” & “L,” that meant starting their session in a quiet park, sitting side-by-side on a bench where they’ve spent countless hours reading their Bibles and journaling together. These aren’t just habits—they’re emotional anchors in their relationship. Photographing those rituals added a depth to their gallery that no traditional pose ever could.

And then there was the ring: “A” wears a gold band on his right hand as a symbol of engagement in his culture. On their wedding day, that ring will move to his left. It’s a tradition full of meaning—and one I made sure to feature with a detailed, editorial-style shot that tells that part of their story.

Editorial Engagement Photo Ideas for Storytelling

When we think of great engagement photo ideas, editorial photography might not be the first thing that comes to mind—but it should be. Editorial doesn’t mean impersonal or overly styled. It means refined, intentional, and expressive.

I guide my couples with subtle posing, always encouraging movement, touch, and interaction. In “A” & “L’s” gallery, I included:

  • Classic portraits (yes, the ones grandma wants for her mantel)
  • Thoughtful candids full of laughter and genuine connection
  • Detail shots of meaningful objects like their Bibles and both “L” and “A’s” engagement rings
  • Wide, environmental shots that add context and a sense of place
  • Quiet in-between moments that feel like stills from a film

These engagement photo ideas create a well-rounded gallery that feels less like a checklist and more like a visual love letter.

Tips to Plan Meaningful Engagement Photo Ideas

Want to make sure your session is just as unique and story-driven? Here are some ways you can help me create something truly special:

1. Share Your Love Story With Me

Before the session, I’ll send you a short questionnaire. This helps me understand your personalities, how you fell in love, what you value, and how you spend time together. The more I know, the more authentic your photos will be.

2. Bring Meaningful Props

If there’s a book you both love, a blanket from your first date, or items that symbolize your relationship (like “A’s” gold band), bring them! These kinds of details give your engagement photo ideas texture and significance.

3. Pick a Location That Matters to You

Sure, sunset fields and rooftops are gorgeous—but so is the cozy corner of your favorite café or the trail where you go on weekend walks. Let’s choose a spot that feels like you.

4. Let the Moments Unfold Naturally

My sessions are never rushed or overly choreographed. I’ll offer guidance, but the best photos happen when you’re genuinely present with each other. Laugh, talk, cuddle—just be yourselves.

How Your Love Story Inspires Timeless Engagement Photo Ideas

At the end of the day, engagement photo ideas should celebrate what’s true and beautiful about your relationship—not a one-size-fits-all concept. With “A” & “L,” we created something soft, editorial, and sacred without ever showing a full face. Their images still speak volumes, because they are layered with authenticity, intention, and emotional storytelling.

If you’re looking for an engagement session that feels deeply “you”—with all the variety, intimacy, and editorial beauty you’ve been dreaming of—I would be honored to create that with you.
