The Ugly Truth About Curated Shot Lists: Why I Don’t Use Them as a Professional Wedding Photographer

As a professional Virginia wedding photographer, one of the questions I often get from brides and grooms is whether I work off a shot list to create their wedding photos. Time and again they’re often surprised at the answer. I never bring a shot list (other than the family formals list) to a wedding day. And there are very intentional reasons why this approach benefits you and your final wedding gallery.

The Essence of Wedding Photography

In a world of Instagram likes and viral TikTok content, weddings have become insanely stylized and “posed” nowadays. But at ENP, we believe weddings are a sacred event. They are not merely a series of staged photographs. They are dynamic, emotional events filled with spontaneous moments and unique interactions. I say this to my couples often, and I’ll say it again: Your wedding is not a styled shoot.

My goal as a wedding photographer is to capture the authentic essence of your wedding day – the real smiles, the unplanned tears, and the genuine laughter. Does that sometimes involve posing for portraits? Of course! But not every moment relies on posing. And relying on a rigid shot list can actually hinder the organic process of capturing artful imagery. In fact, it might instead make the photos feel more like a checklist rather than a celebration and magnification of the marriage you’re building.

Embracing the Unpredictable

Every wedding is unique. Trying to predict every important moment on a shot list is like trying to predict the weather. Will the groom’s reaction when he first sees his bride be just as they planned on paper? What if your guests miss the cue to throw the perfect petal toss at your ceremony? Will your dog actually sit and look at the camera or will he be distracted by people around him? As your wedding photographer, I embrace the unpredictability of your special day.

I wholeheartedly believe that capturing moments as they happen rather than manufacturing every second results in truly priceless photos. Candid is what gives a photo value. This approach allows me to capture those fleeting, heartfelt moments that will make your wedding album truly special and personal. But it requires a little trust and a lot of surrender. Your job is to focus on remaining present on your wedding day.

The Downside of a Wedding Photos Shot List

There are a lot of cons associated with working off a strict and lengthy wedding photos shot list. Let’s get into it…

Wedding Photos Shot Lists Limit Creativity

A shot list can be creatively constraining. It can force me to focus on ticking off items rather than exploring the unique opportunities your wedding presents. By not adhering to a shot list, I can use my expertise and artistic intuition to capture moments that might otherwise be missed. This flexibility ensures that your photos are a true reflection of your day and not just a series of standard poses and scenes.

Wedding Photos Shot Lists Are Risky Business

You might be surprised to read this, but avoiding a shot list helps both of us avoid legal problems. Many shot lists are the result of brides trying to copy what they see and love on Pinterest, TikTok, or Instagram. But did you know that recreating a photo exactly is illegal? It infringes on copyright and intellectual property (scary news for that “bridesmaid bouquets around the bride’s head” trend). Social media is great for inspiration, and if you have some inspo photos you like, we can see what creative spin we can put on it.

But beware; social media can be a trap for adopting unrealistic expectations. Odds are those photos you love happened because the couple hired a freely creative photographer who saw the moment or opportunity to capture that beautiful work. Let me do that for you, too! You’ll have a wedding gallery that is uniquely yours for other brides to envy.

Wedding Photos Shot Lists Are Distracting and Time-Consuming

Weddings have a natural rhythm and flow. Constantly referring to a shot list can instantly disrupt this flow, taking time away from capturing candid moments. Instead of focusing on the joy and excitement of your day, I would be focused on ensuring that no item on the list is missed. This can be distracting for both you and me. It slows us down and keeps you from enjoying the moment more freely. As a Virginia wedding photographer with years of experience, I’ve developed the ability to observe, anticipate and capture key moments without the need for a pre-defined list.

Trusting Your Photographer

When you hire a professional wedding photographer, you are not just paying for someone to take pictures; you are investing in their experience, skill, and artistic vision. Trusting your photographer to capture your day without a shot list allows them to work at their best and deliver a set of photos that tell the true story of your wedding.

Experience and Expertise

As a seasoned Virginia wedding photographer, I have photographed numerous weddings. I understand the flow and key moments that are important to capture. I promise you, it is part of my natural flow to include “bridesmaid group photos” and “picture of the first kiss” in the timeline. When you do something hundreds of times, you know when those moments are about to happen, almost like breathing. My experience allows me to anticipate and document these moments naturally. Trusting my expertise means you can relax and enjoy your day, knowing that your memories are in capable hands.

Personalized Photos

By not working off a shot list, I can provide you with a more personalized collection of images. Each wedding is different, and a generic shot list doesn’t account for the unique elements of your celebration. It forgets to factor in your venue, the light, the colors, the emotion. Whether it’s the intricate details of your decor, the spontaneous dance moves of your guests, or the intimate glances you share with your partner, my goal is to capture the individuality of your wedding in an intimate, effortless, and artful way.

Communicating Your Vision

Of course, this doesn’t mean that your preferences are not important. Before your wedding, we will have detailed discussions about your vision, your must-have moments, and the people who are most important to you. In fact, I have a rather lengthy bridal questionnaire I send to all my couples to let them download everything they want and planned into this wedding. I study this questionnaire intently before your big day, and we even go over it on a final week-before consultation call. This allows me to understand your priorities, helps me know what surprises or special moments to expect, and ensures that I capture the moments that matter most to you without the need for a rigid shot list.

Embracing Collaboration and Flexibility

This wedding photos shot list-free approach ultimately fosters collaboration and flexibility between us. While I won’t be working off a strict list, I will be mindful of your preferences and ensure that your key moments are captured. This balance between structure and spontaneity results in a wedding album that is both comprehensive and creatively fulfilling.

Overall, not working off a shot list allows me to provide you with a wedding photography experience that is intimate, effortless, and artfully inspired. As your Virginia wedding photographer, my goal is to capture the true essence of your wedding day, creating a timeless collection of images that you will cherish for a lifetime. By trusting in my expertise and allowing me the flexibility to capture your day as it unfolds, you are ensuring that your wedding photos are a genuine reflection of your love story.

Disclaimer: Like mentioned above, this does not apply to a family formals list, which is the only shot list I DO bring to a wedding. For more information about this, read my journal post on the topic and snag my free Family Formals Shot List template!

Every detail of the Madelyn Tenney Events Spring Design Showcase 2025 was pure magic. As an Atlanta wedding photographer, I had the joy of being invited to capture not only the beautifully curated spaces but also the intimate behind-the-scenes moments that made this spring showcase possible. From lush florals to elegant table settings, the event was a treasure trove of spring wedding inspiration for brides dreaming up their perfect day.

Hosted at Nova Studio in the heart of Atlanta, this carefully crafted experience was designed to set the tone for the upcoming wedding season—and it did not disappoint.

Spring Wedding Inspiration for Modern Southern Brides

The design vision for the showcase–Prima Flora–embraced soft pastels, delicate textures, and fresh seasonal styling. Think romantic blush tones, textured linens, and floral-forward installations. Madelyn and her talented team created a setting that felt simultaneously elevated and welcoming. It was truly a perfect exhibition of what sophisticated spring weddings can be in Georgia.

As I arrived early to document the event setup, I was able to photograph the team in their element: adjusting linens, styling stationery, and rehearsing the layout one last time. These behind-the-scenes moments revealed just how much heart went into this event. It’s easy to see why so many brides trust Madelyn Tenney Events to bring their dream weddings to life.

Behind the Scenes with Madelyn Tenney Events

Before the doors opened, I had the privilege of capturing team headshots for the women behind Madelyn Tenney Events. Their energy, collaboration, and vision made it clear this wasn’t just a design showcase—it was a heartfelt celebration of creativity and community.

The environment was buzzing with excitement as florists arranged final stems and vendors fluffed the final cushions. The team’s chemistry was undeniable, and it translated directly into the seamless flow of the event itself.

The Madelyn Tenney Events Spring Design Showcase

At the heart of the showcase were the intentional design vignettes. Each space told a story, offering spring wedding inspiration tailored for modern Southern brides. One standout element was a centerpiece floral installation by Marigo Flowers, assisted by Pollen Floral Company. It floated above a table layered with blush-toned linens from BBJ La Tavola, catching the light beautifully throughout the afternoon.

An eye-catching ice sculpture by Ice Sculpture Inc. ATL added a playful, elevated touch to the scene, while live entertainment from Jewel the Ballerina captivated attendees with ethereal movement, bringing life to the experience. Glasswing Rentals curated tableware that sparkled under the natural light of Nova Studio, and JC Rental Collective and Party Bound contributed pieces that gave each setup personality and polish.

Why This Event Matters for Atlanta Brides

If you’re a bride planning a wedding in Atlanta, Savannah, or North Georgia looking for fresh spring wedding inspiration, events like this one are invaluable. They don’t just showcase trends—they display the talent of local, trustworthy vendors who are passionate about what they do.
