As a seasoned wedding photographer based in the Washington, DC area, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing some of the sweetest love stories in this historic and picturesque city. I’ve lived here since 2018, and it’s no wonder to me how this city’s charm attracts romantics near and far. Whether you’re planning a grand wedding or an intimate elopement, the nation’s capital offers a stunning backdrop for your special day. However, there are several factors to consider before investing in a venue or deciding to get married in Washington, DC. Here are some essential Washington, DC wedding tips to help you make the most informed decisions and alternatives to maintain that “DC” vibe if you’re considering nearby locations.
Understanding the DC Wedding Scene
Venue Types and Styles
Washington, DC offers a diverse range of wedding venues to fit just about any kind of style you prefer. From elegant ballrooms and historic mansions to scenic parks and iconic landmarks, choosing a venue can be a daunting task with the wide variety offered. Think about the style and ambiance you want for your wedding. For example, if you’re envisioning a classic and timeless wedding, venues like the Larz Anderson House or the Daughters of the American Revolution Headquarters offer stunning architecture and historic charm. If you prefer a modern and chic setting, the District Winery or the Sequoia could be perfect choices. Other venues that have my heart include Tudor Place, the Hay-Adams, Waldorf Astoria, Intercontinental the Willard Hotel, and the DC War Memorial.

Permits and Regulations
One unique aspect of getting married in DC is the requirement for permits, especially if you’re considering an outdoor venue or a public space like the National Mall or Rock Creek Park. Permits can be pricey, and are sometimes limited, especially during peak tourist seasons. Make sure to research and obtain any necessary permits well in advance. Luckily, I’ve had great experiences working with NPS on obtaining permits. Most of the time they are responsive and helpful, so reach out sooner rather than later!
Accessibility & Transportation
DC is a city – a busy one. As such, you should consider the logistics of your chosen location, such as parking availability, nearby transit, and overall accessibility for your guests, especially elderly or mobility challenged friends & family. The metro is one option for getting guests close to your venue, but not all venues are within reasonable walking distance from a metro, especially if guests are wearing formal footwear. Likewise, parking is expensive and limited. Street parking may make many out of town guests nervous, and garage parking can fill up fast. There are a number of bus charter businesses you can consult if you want to provide transportation for guests.
Events, Protests and Road Closures
Washington DC naturally invites a lot of public events, due to being the seat of government. These can range from Police Week to the Marine Corps Marathon to Cherry Blossom Festival to various civic demonstrations and protests. Be mindful also of government events and the Congressional calendar. Among the many Washington, DC wedding tips I learned over my career here, this one is not talked about often. But I’ll share a secret, as the wife of a Hill Staffer: Consider having your wedding on a “recess week” of Congress. Often any planned event leads to intense traffic and frustrating road closures. Don’t be fooled into thinking an event in one region of the city will help you avoid problems at a venue on the opposite end. DC isn’t all that big and is mostly accessible through only a few bridges, so any event that draws enough crowds can lead to traffic delays that will complicate your wedding day. While not all events can be predicted (particularly quick-turn protests arising as a reaction to current events), doing a ton of research on what might be happening in the district will serve you well before setting a date.
Peak Seasons and Weather
Washington, DC experiences four distinct seasons, each with its own… let’s say… charm. Spring and fall are particularly popular for weddings due to the beautiful weather and scenic foliage. These seasons often have the most mild temperatures. However, because of the weather and scenery, these seasons are also peak times for tourists and other weddings, so venues and vendors book up quickly. Especially around cherry blossom season, the added crowds and traffic can be overwhelming. If you’re set on a specific date, securing your venue and vendors as early as possible is crucial.
Summer weddings can be lovely but DC is known for it’s intense heat and humidity. If you’re considering a summer DC wedding, plan accordingly with plenty of indoor options or shaded areas. Winter can be beautiful as well, particularly around the holidays, but our winters can be very cold. Indoor venues serve you best during the winter.
Alternatives to a DC Wedding
If the logistics above are adding stress to your wedding planning, don’t fret! DC is bordered by some really beautiful and iconic wedding venue options in VA and MD as well, giving you same the historic charm and classical elegance the district itself can offer. Here are some alternative tips to having a Washington, DC wedding.
Northern Virginia Venues
If you’re looking for a venue with a similar vibe to DC but with potentially fewer logistical challenges, Northern Virginia offers several fantastic options. Arlington and Old Town Alexandria boasts many beautiful venues, including Top of the Town, George Washington’s River Farm, Carlyle House, The Rectory on Princess Street, the Lorien Hotel & Spa, or the Alexandrian. Or, if you want to find beautiful venues a little drive out from the buzz of DC, consider Rust Manor House, Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, Crystal View, Breaux Vineyards, or Heigh Torr Estate. These venues are just a short drive from DC, making them convenient for guests to fly into (Dulles and Reagan both being airport options) and offering the chance to wander into the capital during their visit.

Maryland Venues
Maryland also boasts beautiful venues that can give you the essence of a DC wedding. Consider the Newton White Mansion in Mitchellville, which combines historic charm with modern amenities. The Glenview Mansion in Rockville is another excellent choice, offering lush gardens and a grand ballroom. Other options include Congressional Country Club, the George Peabody Library, Celebrations at the Bay, or Chesapeake Bay Beach Club.

DC Engagement Session
If alternative Virginia or Maryland venues solve the logistics but fail to scratch your itch for a “DC Wedding” experience, remember that you can always have your engagement session in DC! This allows engaged couples to feature their favorite landmarks and historic culture of the district in their photos, without having to host their wedding there. Photo permits and seasonal considerations are still a factor, but these become much more manageable when it’s just about moving around me plus you two, rather than your entire guest list.

If your venue is in the heart of the city, consider venues with nearby metro access for added convenience.

Introduce your guests to our vibrant food scene with a welcome dinner or rehearsal dinner hosted at the historic Old Ebbitt Grill, Old Angler’s Inn, Joe’s Seafood, or 1789.
